Find Out What Causes Migraines
What causes migraines is not clearly understood but it is a fact that migraine headaches afflict three times more women than men. Research has discovered that migraine symptoms may be due to changes in the diameter of the blood vessels in the head. First they contract and then expand as the pain begins. It is not yet known why this should happen at all.
One theory is that they might be caused by an imbalance of the mood-regulating chemical serotonin. Hormone fluctuations are also thought to be a factor. Many physicians believe that the tendency towards migraine headaches may run in families. Whatever the cause they can be very debilitating. The pain is intense and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and vision disturbances. Some people experience a migraine with aura - bright points of lights, zig-zag patterns, or blind spots prior to an attack. Others report strange odors and numbness in the limbs, although this is more unusual.
Some common triggers that may bring on a migraine include certain foods such as MSG, chocolate, cheese, and red wine. Stress and changes in the normal routine may also be triggers of cluster headaches and poor diet, lack of sleep, and exposure to strong odors can also bring on an episode. Different triggers affect different people.
Stress is a big cause of migraine or tension headaches and can be so severe that the sufferer has to go to bed. Sometimes the symptoms are less severe if the sufferer is able to lie down in a dark, quiet place when they first start, and the symptoms may then last for a shorter time, be less severe and sometimes even without the nausea.
Most migraines do not respond to aspirin or acetaminophen. NSAID’s like Aleve are a bit more effective and there are some over the counter migraine medications that may help. Some doctors believe the herb feverfew may prevent some migraines, but often prescription medication is required for proper control of migraines and some of those may be taken as a preventative measure along with lifestyle changes and avoiding triggers. While we are still not entirely sure what causes migraines, they can be treated and controlled.
